About Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour

Discover the highlights of the Netherlands’ capital on our Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour! Your guide will lead you around the city, talking about both its rich history and modern-day living. As you walk, you’ll see landmarks such as Dam Square, the Amstel River, the old Begijnhof, and many other landmarks! This tour is available in a small or private group, depending on your selection.

DISCOVER WHERE AMSTERDAM WAS FOUNDED

Your Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour begins at Dam Square, where Amsterdam was founded way back in the 13th century! The square was named for the literal dam on the Amstel River and was originally a small fishing village.

SEE AMSTERDAM’S SMALLEST HOUSE & ANNE FRANK HOUSE

As you stroll through Amsterdam’s city center, you’ll see countless romantic, high, and slim canal houses overlooking the city’s many waterways. Your guide will also show you the tiniest house in the city and the Anne Frank House.

AMSTERDAM’S BEGIJNHOF

It wouldn’t be a walking tour in Amsterdam without the Begijnhof - one of the oldest hofjes. A hofje is a courtyard surrounded by privately funded almshouses, and the Begijnhof has provided housing for the elderly since the Middle Ages.

STROLL ALONG THE AMSTEL RIVER

Finish your Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour with a leisurely stroll by the Amstel River - the city’s namesake! Nearby, you’ll find a grandiose national monument originally dedicated to victims of World War II and later honoring all war victims.

You really get to know the Amsterdam on this tour

This tour is a great way to get to know the city. We did it on our first day, and found it super easy to navigate Amsterdam afterwards (easily found the red light district, for example). Nikki was also a great guide - nice to get a student perspective on life in Amsterdam!

Julia

Choosing a private tour option was a great call!

I feel like this Amsterdam walking tour is the perfect introduction to the city. You see all the highlights, learn a lot and get some great pictures. I have one in front of the tiny house! We chose the private tour option and I recommend that everyone do the same. It was just my wife, guide and me - perfect! Our guide was amazing, he knew the city’s complete history of World War 2, colonial times, and the Medieval Ages. He truly dedicated himself to us. Thank you!

DESCRIPTION

Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour

EXPLORE THE AREA AROUND DAM SQUARE

Begin from Dam Square: a classic start for guided tours and where Amsterdam was founded! A dam was built in the 13th century (hence the name Dam Square) to prevent flooding from the river Amstel, allowing a fishing village to flourish. As you walk, you’ll also come across the Royal Palace of Amsterdam and the Torensluis Bridge with its statue of acclaimed Dutch writer Multatuli.

DISCOVER CHARMING AMSTERDAM HOUSES

Continue your walk and see the slim, tall, romantic homes overlooking Amsterdam’s many canals. You’ll also spot a pulley system on top of the houses, which was used to hoist goods up into the attic for storage. Along the way, there will be a miniature version of the canal houses. Called the smallest house in Amsterdam, this building is only 2 meters wide and 5 meters deep!

VISIT ONE OF THE OLDEST HOFJES AND CIRCLE BACK TO DAM SQUARE

Go across Squi Square (originally a body of water!) and head to the Begijnhof. All Amsterdam tour guides will show you hofjes - they’re courtyards circled by almshouses, providing housing for the elderly. The Begijnhof is particularly famous as the only inner court in Amsterdam founded in the Middle Ages. Afterward, go back to Dam Square, stroll along the Amstel River, and visit the national monument again.

Did you know that Amsterdam has more canals than Venice?

Amsterdam is popularly nicknamed ‘the Venice of the North’ - and with good reason! The Dutch capital counts 165 canals - 15 more canals than Venice’s 150. In fact, you could travel over 100 km just on the canals of Amsterdam! However, there are three main (and most famous) canals forming concentric belts around the city: Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht.

Book your Amsterdam Guided Walking Tour to hear about the city's rich history as you explore its charming streets!
